There's a definite correlation: The higher the handicap, the longer the golfer stands over the ball. If you see someone frozen at address for 45 seconds, you just know they're a 30-handicapper.
When a golfer stands stiffly over the ball, you can almost see the tension spreading from the death grip, up the forearms and into the shoulders and neck. The inevitable result of all this tightness is a restricted swing motion and no power.
All good players start their swings with some sort of ignition move. Some tour pros "milk" the golf club by regripping it, others bounce the club-head off the ground or waggle it above the ball. These "micro-moves" have the double benefit of relaxing the hands, arms and shoulders while providing a trigger to start the swing. You can't swing smoothly when you start from a dead stop.
To free yourself of tension at address, develop your own swing trigger. It may be a little movement with the right instep or a slight bump of the left hip forward. Anything to get your swing started without excessive tension.
