1. THE PROBLEM
Closed clubface = low and left
Amalia Pyne of New Canaan, Conn., learned the basics as a child, and after a long layoff is looking forward to playing with friends and for business. She came to us hitting too many shots low and left. Amy had a very strong grip--her right hand almost underneath the handle--and an open shoulder alignment. Her strong grip led her to close the clubface at the top of her swing (above) and through impact; swinging down along her shoulder line created a steep, out-to-in swing path.
2. THE FIX
It's hip to be square
First we gave Amy a grip that would help her keep the clubface square to the swing path. I showed her how the V's created by the thumb and the forefinger on each hand should point between her right shoulder and chin. Next, we squared her shoulders. I told Amy she should be able to see her left shoulder as she looked at her target.
3. THE RESULT
Higher, straighter, longer
With her new grip, Amy's hands now work together to help keep the clubface square to the swing path. A more neutral grip allows her to release the club properly, which adds some oomph to her ball-striking. With her shoulders pointing down the target line instead of to the left, Amy is swinging down from inside the target line instead of across it from the outside. This less-steep inside approach also adds loft at impact and improves her accuracy. Two simple changes to her grip and alignment improved Amy's clubface angle, swing path and angle of approach.
